08 650 xt starting problems

Hi i am new to forum but have a ? I have a 2008 650 xt with 55 hours and 401 miles. when trying to start, the motor rolls over a little then the starter humms and seems like it locks up, but if i put it in gear and rock it a little then put it back in nuetral it starts right up. think might be valves needing set or dead spot in starter? It doesn't do it all the time so i don't think it is the battery.

In the 08 model year a few bad starters got out there and had trouble cranking past top dead center. I had a few 08 650's with this problem. We would change the starter and no more problem. You could check your valves as that could cause the problem.

Mine has been doing this too. I've got to where I turn the key again quickly and it spins over. EAAC is there a rebuild kit for the starter?

It sounds like a bad bendix in the starter

+1 on this issue.

Don't think it's a bendix because the starter drive engages every time, it just does not have enough power to push though TDC. If you turn the key back, letting the compression pressure bleed down a touch, then turn the key back to crank mode, she will then fire.... seemingly every time. That being said, I take this as a warning, & since problems don't solve themselves & only get worse over time, I'm looking to correct this issue. I'm still on this fence as to weather this is a battery or starter issue.

thanks guys, I am leaning more towards the starter because when I hook battery charger to the battery it will still kinda lock up and humm. sometimes when i hit the starter and then let off and then retry it will go ahead and crank up.

There isn't a rebuild kit out there, the best thing to do is just replace it, its pretty simple, if you want a price just shoot me a pm.

It's neither, mine has had the starter replaced with an upgraded one and I'm running a big car battery under the hood.

Still does it now and then.

Some have reported setting the valves on the loose side cures this issue but I haven't attempted it. I just hold the key and it will crank over TDC and fire right up.

I've read where the starter kickback has cracked the case on some H1 quads. Don't see how but thats what I read.
