2012 prowler tachometer

well i have ran low on play money so now im in project idea mode. my latest is to try figure out how to get a tach in my rig. this is going to be an interesting one. i talked with a buddy that does some fiberglass work and he is going to (only in his spare time) build a gauge pod pillar that looks like the ones in trucks. it will have 4 or maybe 5 two inch gauge pod holders. depending on spacing. i told him to get as many as he could on it and i would just use plugs to fill the extra pods for now.

with that i am looking at a 2 inch digital tachometer. it isnt a must have but it is handy in trouble shooting. for example the manual says to run the engine to 3000 rpm exactly and oil pressure is to be at or between 10 to 20 lbs. stuff like that.

my investigating found that while the 2012 hdx has no tachometer (they dropped the ball on that one) it still has the parts to do so. this is because other areas require the rpm input like the auto choke. i cannot find a wiring diagram anywhere for this thing. i did look at a 2009 xtx diagram and found the yellow/red wire at the gauge is the tach input. i am hoping that wire is still run to my gauge pod allowing me to tap into it.

next is something that i do not have much knowledge of but i am going to learn. figuring out tach pulse signals and converting a 2 cylinder tach to a single cylinder. i am not into all those black box tachs they can stick on lawnmowers, i want to keep all my gauges the same style and color. if anyone has some input here it is more than welcome.

also this part is completely up in the air. i am a computer programmer/engineer so this is my wild idea. i had this long shot idea of building a small arduino computer that would serve as a touch screen informational panel. something that can give me my days top rpm, my highest water temp of the day, lowest oil pressure, outside temp ect... it can tap into any sensor with this setup and it takes very little power too run but this one is way out in left field so its just a pipe dream at the moment.

well there it is. if anyone has any info, experience with, or pretty much anything, just throw it out there. the more info i can get or questions that i havent thought of yet are very much appreciated.

Didn't know that the HDX's deleted the tach feature! Thanks for the info on that! Gages are a nice add on, a tach is handy. Anytime I change my clutch set up I use the tach to check shiftout. Wonder if the early model HDX heads would work on the later models? I used a flat panel to mount my gages, but pods would have been better. Good luck on your project!

Not sure about the 2012 HDX but my 2014 HDX has one. You have to go into a different mode to view it though.

yep. the prowlers got an updated gauge in 2013 that has the tach. i know the 2012 doesnt have it (read the owners manual) and im not sure if the 2011 isnt the same. when ever the prowler went from the needle/digital gauge package over to the digital only is where it stopped. i drove the 2013 and i liked the gauge better but im not going to shell out that much to update it hoping its a plug and play.
