starter problems

Have been having starter problem after running the trail for an hour or so If I turn engine off all I get is A click from solenoid
when I try to restart. If I keep trying it will finally catch the stStarter seems to lockup from heat. Possible bad starter bushings,or

solenoid not making good contact? Machine is 2006 Prowler 650 H1. only has about 1200 miles on it.any help is appreciated.

Check the voltage at the starter while cranking it over, you should see a minimum of 10.5 volts. Mine does the same thing occasionally, but always starts on the 2nd attempt.

My starter was slow or weak then not starting when hot. Finally it went out completely. Pulled the starter and it had broken magnets that just fell out.

Dick, I just checked the relay on the starter side and it seems to act as the manual says it should. It drops voltage to 0 then engine starts and voltage jumps back to 12+
The voltage shows about 3 volts then goes back up, Meter doesn't register fast enough to get down to 0.

Firecat I am thinking probably my problem is in starter. Hoping not relay is cheaper.

More than likely your starter. I'm on my 3rd one! After market starter lasted as long as a OEM unit!

Mine did the same thing occasionally, then one the last Cheese Trail ride, after shutting it off, it did it every time I keyed it and wouldn't start. Just clicked and nothing. I took off the cover and smacked the starter with a wrench. It started fine and hasn't acted up since. I think I just had some dirt or crap built up around the Bendix that wasn't letting it engage. I haven't bought a new one yet, but should. But it starts like a champ after that one big smack.

Was it from ebay? The new OEM I ordered didn't give me much confidence. Made in China, looks and feels cheap. I needed it ASAP of course, with country cat so close I get stuff in 1 day most of the time.

Yeah, I got it off ebay! Sure wish they would offer a rebuild kit!
