Power Steering Motor from a car??

I'd love to have PS on my ride but not with the price tags for complete units. Has anybody gotten past the thought stages of useing a 12v motor from a car? Either single end with an 8-collar spline gear with the motor wired in reverse or as a column mount motor? I've see some used ones in both styles for under $100 on eBay. Welding, shortening the shafts, etc. is not for the faint of heart but I've done it on many a tractor. Any ideas or thoughts from anybody that's played with this idea?

Take care........ Greg

in theory it coild be done. The nice thing about EPS ssytems is the amount of assist it gives it depending on ur speed. The less speed the more assist it gives. There would be no real way to do this do -it -yourslef application. To much assist at high speeds is not good. And too little assist at low speeds istnt helpful
