4wd not working in forward gears.

I recently picked up a 2008 Prowler 650 on craigslist and I am real happy with it. The previous owner added a four seat conversion, full aftermarket cage, HID lights, light bar with 3 lights, PRP seats all around, 3 point seatbelts, soft top cover for cage and 2 inch wheel spacers. The cage, seats and skid plates also have Rigid Industries emblems cut out and stitched on it. I also put on new ProComp tires yesterday. So slowly but surely I am going thru everything to see what has been done to it. The one thing I can't seem to figure out is 4wd will not work in H or L but will engage when put in reverse. If I activate the locker 4wd will work in H, L and R. I measured the voltage at the switch and found the white/red wire has 12volts going to it in 2wd but when put in 4wd it only drops down to 9volts instead of 0volts to engage the 4wd. I found the previous owner had bypassed the reverse speed control, so I am assuming the problem might be in that area. But I am not sure how the PO had done the bypass. If anyone has some thoughts of where to look or what to check I would greatly appreciated it. Otherwise the whole family loves the new toy!

Welcome to the family.

4X4 should engage in H or L or R or N. If it only works in R and you say he did some type of bypass then I would only guess it's in his wiring bypass

Thanks! Glad to be here.

I have looked everywhere for a bypass and found nothing. Ohm'd out the red wire with green stripe and it has not been shorted out. The override switch has 0 volts going to it. It should be 5 or 1.5. I am wondering if the CDI box may be faulty and if the sensor for the gear selection might be bad. Not sure where to look next. I will have to find a wiring diagram next and see what is going on.

If it turns out to be the CDI I think Joe has one on the cheap and it's a Dynatek.

I think I have a stocker in the shed as-well

Look @ mymowerparts . com for your wiring diagram

Thanks for all the help!

I downloaded and printed out the service manual from the above link but it doesn't contain any wiring diagrams. It is a good troubleshoot aid but doesn't contain enough detailed info to troubleshoot the wiring. It only goes into the basic voltage readings. Its been rather fustrating to try and figure this out. I have removed all the panels and dash looking for signs of someone tinkering and found nothing. Does anybody know where the voltage that goes to the override switch comes from? I am guessing from the CDI box but without taking all the wrapping off the wires I can trace where the wire goes to. Once it hits the big wiring bundle I loose it. And there isn't the same color wire that goes to the override switch going into the CDI box. I am still thinking that the problem lies somewhere in the CDI box that controls everything. Any thoughts?

Try this one for wiring diagram.

It is the 7th link down from the top just under 2012 service bulletins.

It will be all the wiring diagrams and you will have to look in that file to find yours.

Thanks riddler28. I didn't see the wire diagram the first time looking thru. I was able to download the schematics and now I can make sense on whats going on. I found that the common denominator in the whole wiring schematic is the 2wd relay. The override switch provides a ground to the relay, once this happens a ground is applied to the CDI box red/green wire and you override the speed control. Plus there is a wire running from the relay to the 2wd/4wd actuator as well. In my case I suspect the 2wd relay is bad and is causing the problems. The CDI box is working correctly because the machine will run full throttle in reverse. Not sure why 4wd will work in reverse and not forward with the relay being bad, but I will replace the relay and go from there. I hope that will fix the problem.
