Question 2009 Prowler 700 xtx Engine Sputters/No Power

After driving for a few miles the engine will sputter/backfire and have no power with moderate to heavy acceleration (like its running out of gas). It will run fine as long as you accelerate very slowly up to about 35mph. After 35mph it will start to sputter even with no acceleration. Once the sputtering starts it will not stop unless you let off the throttle and it will also do it neutral when revving the engine. However once everything cools off the engine will run fine under moderate to heavy acceleration. It has been doing this every once in a while for the last couple of years, but now it does it all the time.

Welcome! Sure sounds like fuel delivery, should have a minimum of 43 psi fuel pressure. Download a free service manual from K&T lawn equipment. It will show the procedure for checking.

Welcome to the site! You might also check the valve adjustment and worse case when I had that problem my cam & rockers were shot due to a oil pump gear failure that plagued the 2007 650's.

The fuel pressure is 45-46psi and after the pump stopped making noise the pressure went down to 15psi.

RD, this is just what Dave's was doing! He fixed his by messing with the fuel vent hose and blowing out the fuel lines and filter. I'm wondering if ethanol could be a problem with these older fuel injected models. Could be ethanol induced, just like marine fuel hose degregation after only a few tears of service... Thoughts?

Brad, start at the vent line, up front, it leads into the right front horizontal frame member, under the hood, behind the winch mount area. Make sure you can blow air through it. Then move to the filter and hoses, do the same. All the way to the throttle body. You may find your culprit in there somewhere. The pressure drop from the pump running to off, is normal. The regulator determines when the pump runs. My buddy never found actual pluggage, but your not gonna see whats blown back though the system, into the tank. His runs great again, though!

that is what has held me back from E-85! Unsure of the potential damage of ethanol to the rubber fuel lines, and components. Cleaning the lines out may very well cure the problem.

Snipped a 1/4" off the spark plug wire and put in a new plug and it runs like a champ now.
If it starts acting up again, I will clean out the fuel lines and get a new coil.
