read your owners manual

yes it seems like everyone says it but in reality how many of us really do it. i didnt. my excuse? i didnt have one and didnt think i needed to try track one down. well i was recently doing a little research for a tachometer project and came across the free downloadable owners manuals. i was reading the one for my 2012 hdx and came across something interesting. VERY interesting.

i have a short history with the hdx before i bought mine. my brother had the same year and same color one i bought. i helped him do his service every 500 miles so i thought i knew what to do. well what i came across made the service much easier and much quicker.

every oil change i would get two funnels and daisy chain them together to pour the oil into the dipstick tube. well that is wrong. i found there is an oil fill just under the seat. you remove a rubber plug in the plastic and the big plug was exposed. i used a tire iron to get the plug off. it has a cross in it that the flat end of the tire iron slides into like a screw driver. i poured my oil into it and capped it. no more being very careful to keep dirt from falling into the daisy chain of funnels. i always thought arctic cat really dropped the ball on that design but i guess i was the one that dropped the ball lol.

if anyone is interested, here is the link to alot of arctic cat stuff from instructional videos to service manuals (even the 2016 prowler!) to the owners manuals.

Like every other user manual it ends up lost/given away/misplaced! When I bought my XTX I wrote Arctic Cat for a operators manual for my Prowler (I bought it used). It has some useful information!
