Check your Prowler

Everyone with an XTZ 1000 needs to check the two plastic tubes coming out of the bottom of the air box reagularly to make sure they are not melted off.

When trying to find out why the plastics under the passenger seat caught on fire I discovered one of the tubes had actually melted. This tube was melted prior to the fire under the passenger seat. When I took the air box lid off, it was full of sand and oil on the carb side and the boot going to the carb was full of sand and oil from the last dunes trip which was 4 weeks prior to the fire.

The oil was "metallic" according to the dealer. I saw the drain plug and it was covered 1/4" thick with metal shavings and chunks...some chunks were over 1/8". Compression in one of the cylinders was only 80 lbs.

The dealer is in the process of tearing down the engine now to see if I need to replace the upper end or the entire engine.

not trying to be a jerk. i appreciate your "notifying" all of us, but don't you clean your equipment after you ride? clean the filters etc? Check it over? make sure your lugs/nuts/bolts are tight , nothing is falling off? Or did you just miss this in your inspections?

Dunes will destroy your ride faster then any type of riding...

Good point Split

I think it's a good idea for everyone to do a pre flight like we do on airplanes before you drive your side x side. A check list is probably over kill but a good look over of the important parts is a great idea. Start at the front left of the car and walk around clockwise finishing up at the drivers side.

Here is a mini version of what a check list would look like. I just made this up in 5 minutes so I know a few are missing and it's not perfect but it gives you an idea.

Great info guys, we put these things through more than they bought off for and they keep going. You always have to have a check list and give the Cat a little TLC. Well put guys
