Battery losing cranking power overnight?

I recently bought a new Powersport battery ($100) for my XTZ 1000. I usually buy a new cheap mower battery every year. I decided this year to buy a higher amp battery made for UTVs. It has been working fine for about a month.

Yesterday, morning, my Prowler would not start in 41 degrees. Turning the key just got the dash to light and a click when turned to the start position. I charged the battery for about 2 hours and it started when I tried it then.

I drove it from my barn to my carport and charged the battery to a 'full' charge and afterwards left it overnight without out starting it. This morning, in 19 degrees after a low of 13 overnight, the same problem I had yesterday. Turning the key on got the dash to light and turning to the start position got a click only. No attempt to activate the starter. Checking the battery with a voltmeter, I got 12.4 volts. I now have it out of the chassis and being charged.

Can the battery be 12.4 volts and have no cranking amps?

Voltage can be misleading. May show 12+ volts, but still won't crank a motor over. Check your voltage with the key turned to the start position, the minimum would be around 10.5-11 volts. at the starter motor. I'd recommend getting a load test on the battery.

also check your hot and ground wires for loose , broken strands or corrosion in the wires

if nothing above check for voltage drains .. pulling fuses usually the easiest ways to start that process.

Thanks for the ideas. I am going to take it to Autozone tomorrow and have it load tested. I'll let you know the outcome.

I took the battery to Autozone. The nice young man tested it and said it was a good battery.

I went home and installed it in 30+ weather. I changed the washers that hold down the battery cables making sure the cable terminals were tight and put a wide Velcro strap around the case so next time I can lift it out easily.

The battery was fully charged when I took it in for the load test. I did not charge it again after re-installing it.

After sitting overnight, I did not check the voltage (too cold for this kid). At 8 AM, I went out in 11 degrees and it started right up.

I just put a charger on it and giving it a slow 2 amp charge while I go back to bed for awhile.

My thought is that the lock washers on the cable terminals lost tension and allowed the terminals to loosen. I wish I had paid closer attention when I first removed the battery, but all is good right now.
