Oil flow direction

After doing a belt job on my 2009 xtz and starting it up and running it for a short time I noticed a slight noise start coming from either the engine or transmission. Come to find out I was about 1.5qt low on oil. So I topped it off, ran it for a couple of minutes (no noise), and drained the oil. The metal on the magnet is the only metal that came out (photo attached). No metal at all was in the drained oil. I do plan on cutting the filter open to check it out, but my question is how does the oil flow? Does it go through the filter before or after the cooler? Mainly want to know so I can check for metal in the cooler if it goes through that first.

My 700 goes to the cooler first, then back through the filter. There is a 1/4" pipe plug in the filter boss that forces the oil to the cooler.
