Won't start or idle without throttle

So getting really frustrated with this, I don't know what to try next. Got a ride planned in two weeks.

It hasn't been starting with just a key turn. I have to give it a little throttle to start. Must maintain slight throttle pressure to idle or it will die. After a few minutes of warm up it will idle on it's own. The other thing it will often die after you let of the throttle after mid to high rpm instead of returning to idle.

I replaced the plugs with new ones, replaced the spark plug wires too. The front plug was black/tan the rear plug was black. No active codes and the TPS is set in the middle.

I'm considering draining the gas, adjusting the valves, throttle cable adjustment and trading it in.

Sounds like the fuel pump.

I might pick up tester and see. Doesn't explain the black plugs, so I think I got more stuff going on.
My fuel guage is way off, on two bars on the gauge, I'm bone dry. Maybe it's time for a new one.

Update: So I turned up the idle and it will start and stay running on just key. I'll test drive tomorrow.

So it will start on a key turn and idle. At 1500rpms no solid information on what it is suppose to do. I don't see it in the service manual and the internet is full of conflicting info.

I feel like I covered the problem instead of fixing it. Shouldn't the EFI maintain a high idle for until warm? Thus do I have sensors not providing info or incorrect information to the ECU? Still smells a little rich too.

It should go back down to normal idle around 1300. Does the fuel pump hold a constant 43psi? Or make a grinding noise?
Pull the fuel pump assembly just enough you can hear in the tank and turn it on.

Hey Firecat. I had a similar problem with my 700 a while back. The steps I took included clearing the vent line for the fuel tank by disconnecting and blowing air through it with the compressor and a new plug. I also drained my gas to make sure there was no water. After that, it worked and was back to normal.

doesn't run very smooth at that rpm now. Happier at 1500 and up. That's a problem because I set the idle rpms when it was cold and after a warm up run It was idling at 1800, which is bad. grind the gears bad.

I lowered the idle down to 1400 when warm. Going to let it cool off and try to start it.

I'm wondering about the ISC..... Anyone now how to test one? I didn't see that in the service manual.

Once you have the throttle cable adjusted and the TPS set, then set the ISC. That tells the computer the throttle range. I did it once on our XTX and it fixed a similar problem like you are having.
