Belt slipping or clutching issue?

Hi all, newbie here. Just picked up a '07 650 XT to replace my 4 wheeler.
Had my first issue yesterday. Backed it out of the garage, then put into high. Started going but then the motor just revved higher and the machine didn't move any faster. Reverse seemed ok. Played around through hi/lo/reverse with same issue. Drove it around slowly for 10 minutes or so and then it seemed to correct itself. I do think I did smell burnt rubber. Not sure if it is a clutching issue or a bad belt. There is about 2800 miles on it and it was supposedly maintained by the dealer. It had sat in the rain the day before and our temps have dropped below freezing if that helps any.

Welcome Bobweiser. Could be a few things going. Have heard of some having leaking oil seals that get oil on the belt. Or maybe it got some water in it from the rain. It should not have because of the clutch cover that should be on it. Or maybe it has some clutch issues. Best thing to do is pull the cover and find out what if anything is going on.

You may have crap or just ice in your clutchs. Take the cover off and clean real good with brake clean and replace the belt. If the clutches are sticking you will burn a belt.

09 XTZ, 4" seats, 5" lowered cage, dual exhaust, HMF intake, UTV crap frame stiffeners, A/F meter, Terracross tires, RZR seats, passenger grab bar, Airdam 1-3 clutch.

Belt slipping should occur whether forwards or backwards though.

Best to open it up as suggested and see what's happening.

I took the cover off and don't see anything out of the ordinary. While I was trying to get the clutch off, a small chunk of one of the ears broke off. Will this cause issues? I still haven't been able to get the nut off to get the clutch off.

I would not try to get the belt off with out removing the big nut on the primary I have heard of some guys say that they changed there belt on the trail but I would like to see that done I had mine a part and I tryed to get the belt off just to see if I could do it even with the little bolt in to spread the secondary.You are gonna need a good impact wrench, where in the UP are ya at, Im just south of Marquette 25 minutes if your close enough I can help you out.

I agree, I can't get the belt off without taking off the primary. That's how I ended up breaking the little ear off while trying to hold the primary from turning. Looks like time to upgrade my impact wrench. Dave - I am 10 min south of Escanaba. Thanks for the offer though.

Just changed a belt on my 2006/650. Although some people claim that it's easy to change the belt without removing the primary, I never had much luck at it. Perhaps if you HAD to, you could make it work.

Like yourself, my first attempt at removing the primary using only a wrench didn't go far. I've got my Father's day list submitted already....IMPACT WRENCH. You'll be surprised how easy it is with an impact. You may need to throw some heat on the nut as it is installed (and reinstalled...don't forget) with red loctite.

Regarding the burning rubber smell and the issue with changing between gears. That's the exact same symptoms that I had about 30 minutes before the belt snapped and left my son and daughter stranded and calling for a tow (at 1 in the morning). I wouldn't worry too much about a small chip off the primary, as long as it didn't damage the main hub.
