Accident

Lost a ORV rider on a lake in central Michigan, night riding and drove into a hole in the ice that was used for a polar plunge. One dead, one critically injured, and two escaped without injury. Upper Michigan Counties are forming a task force to improve safety on trails, this is for snowmobiles, and ATV/UTV's. To many people getting killed due to high speeds, and or alcohol.

When will people learn. Seems every time the annual reports on snowmobile/atv accident and deaths come out, speed and alcohol are the cause in the majority of them.

UTV's are the new fad to most and I don't think a majority of the new riders understand off road machines and how they handle, throw some booze in the mix and good judgement is gone. I'm no expert by any means but I've been riding since a very young kid, even survived the 3-wheeler death machines

Hard to fight to get them street legal when something like this happens. Not sure about the lake accident as being alcohol related or not, maybe just being in the wrong place at the wrong time! Saw some pictures of a RZR being pulled out of the ice, but don't know if that was the vehicle or not. Sounds like the front occupants were trapped under water, and the rear people survived.

I couldn't find anything on the lake accident, that would be a horrible way to go. They could have been just driving slow and hit an unmarked hole in the ice. No matter the cause, prayers to the family & friends of those affected and hopefully some good will come from it to prevent something similar from happening in the future.

I believe it said they lost control and slid through a fenced off area and went into the hole in the ice. Four people involved, two got out unscathed, one died, and one in critical condition.

I guess I will be the odd man out. I am glad I live in an area that is not regulated or patrolled. The whole reason for us having recreational cabins in the area I am in and ATV/ UTV/ Snowmobiles is so we can get out and have a few drinks and have fun. So far I know of more wrecks involving people who did not drink versus those of us who do. Maybe we just have more practice I don't know, but I for one can't remember a ride in the last 30 yrs that has not involved trail juice.. and a health pregame session.
