typical hours before engine rebuild on the 650

how many hours is it before you typically have to re work the engine on the 650 ( re-ring, valve job, timing chain). Mine is the 08 650 and only had 3000 miles and i think about 290 hours. Mine has blown the head gasket, the intake valves are sharp as a razor and the timing chain has a lot of slack in it. Long story short i have only had this thing for about a month and a half and is sorta discouraging to have this kind of wear this early.

Welcome to the site. Really depends on how it was treated, and maintained. I have 7,500 miles on mine, but I pulled it down around 3,000 miles and found no wear of any kind. I now have 7,500 miles on it and the same held true. Sounds like it may have been over heated at some point in time, but it is easy to rebuild. Slack in the timing chain may just be the tensioner failing, or worn guides, valve job is something any small engine repair shop can handle. The head gasket is easy to replace, but word of caution is the head bolts are considered a one time use. I still have not found any supporting documents on the bolts, but have had several used ones break! If you don't have a manual, you can download a free one at K&T lawn equipment. These things are pretty durable with proper care, I use all synthetic oils in mine, change it every 300-600 miles (depending on the amount of dust I've ridden in), and make sure the air filter is always clean.

Around 3000 I replaced the engine in my '07 650 but that was because the oil pump gear failed and I cooked the engine. I have over 8,000 trouble free miles on mine now.

Thanks for the warm welcome. Its has gotten a little cool here in Tennessee and been waiting on parts since last friday. Not happy with the dealers in this area (honda had me spoiled lol). Hoping to have parts by the first of the week. Any help on these things would be greatly appreciated, I'm wanting to put some gauges in an overhead console so I can monitor the temp, oil pressure and amps. Thanks again.....

Gages are a great addition, Oil Pressure is most important, then the water temp, and voltmeter. I used electrical gages on mine for the ease of install. Do a search on this forum for gage install, may give you some ideas!

We love spending other peoples monies! LOL If anything has been done to a Prowler, you will find it here! Great people, great ideas, and great help! My Prowler was my first exposure to SXS's, joined this site when I got mine! It helped with all of my questions!
