New member from Kentucky

2008 Prowler 650 HT - lifted with SS wheels and ITPs, front brush guard and rack. Goes anywhere. has high miles and needs some maintenance, ie. parking brake doesn't work, shifter needs adjustment, starter sometimes hangs and gives a "volt" warning on the dash. Just replaced broken cv axle (no big deal) did notice that there was no oil in the rear differential. Looking for help adjusting the valves. I am a 2 stroke guy so never fooled with the 4 strokes. I am trying to find out how to get the motor to top dead center. Manual doens't give specific instructions.

Welcome 333rem333. I am gonna just suggest how to get the motor to top dead center and let some others help with the other stuff. I would pull the spark plug and the timing inspection plug. Also the valve covers and me personally I would also remove the cover on the passenger side of the engine. This cover is where a pull starter goes for this motor when it is in a quad. If you pull this cover you will see a notched pulley looking deal that has hole in it to use a bar to advance or turn back the engine to get to top dead center. After all these steps are done hit the starter just for a quick one just to confirm the right way to turn engine to get to tdc. Then I put my finger in spark plug hole and you a bar in the pulley to advance to tdc. Then I double check with the timing mark to make sure on tdc. Then adjust to .004 intake and .006 exaust cold. I am a cheater so always go tight on mine.

It is above the flywheel.
It is a plug that takes a larger allen to remove they show a pic of it in the manual.
There is a line cast into the case that lines up with a line on the flywheel for tdc.

Passenger side 12-0clock look down from your thermostat housing the plug sits horizontal on top of the flywheel / stator housing.

valve adjustment help

got the motor to TDC with the mark on the fly wheel matching the mark on the case. However, the valves still have tension on them. The manual says that they should not have tension on them at TDC. So, I was unsure how to gauge the clearance. Or are the valves way too tight? I did not make any adjustments. I really didn't understand where to stick the feeler gauge to check the gap. Is it easier to get the valve adjustment tool?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you put your finger in the spark plug hole while turning over to make sure you were on compression stroke? Sounds like you may be 180* out.
The compression will be felt on your finger when coming up on compression stroke.

I use a set of feeler gauges for valve tappet clearance.
You put the feeler gauge between the valve stem and the rocker where they touch.
Kinda of a pain but you want just a slight drag on your feeler gauge.

I have never tried the valve adjustment tool so I cannot answer your last ?
