Penetrating Oils Worth

Machinist's Workshop magazine actually tested penetrants for break
out torque on rusted nuts. Significant results! They arranged a subjective
test of all the popular penetrants with the control being the torque
required to remove the nut from a "scientifically rusted" environment.

Penetrating oil Average load

None ..................... 516 pounds

WD-40 .................. 238 pounds

PB Blaster ..............214 pounds

Liquid Wrench ...... 127 pounds

Kano Kroil ............ 106 pounds

ATF-Acetone mix... 53 pounds

The ATF-Acetone mix was a "home brew" mix of 50 - 50 automatic
transmission fluid and acetone.

Note: The "home brew" was better than any commercial product in this
one particular test. A local machinist group mixed up a batch and all now
use it with equally good results. Note also that "Liquid Wrench" is about as
good as "Kroil" for about 20% of the price.

Anyone have any personal experience backing up these claims?

For What its worth ,,I got this info from another guy who says he tried it

I read about that mix a while back and tried it.The problem is trying to apply it.I put it in a Lucas oil treatment bottle ,and tried to squeeze it on.Really messy, and stains everything. It would probably work well,if you had a way to apply it.Just impossible to get it into a tight area.

Rusty nuts in the Southeast ??,,

Acetone will disolve most plastics ,,and not good to get on ones skin as it penetrates into the blood stream .

okay ,,I will tell you a boo boo I did as a kid ..I was painting cars in a garage I cardboarded up .( not good at it but good enough for the price and the sawmill workers I was painting for) I used acetone once for cleaning my paint sprayer out and it swelled the rubber O- rings to where they wouldn't fit the gun any more. and on top of that I cleaned some paint out of my nose that got by the hankerchief I had around me and it burned my nostrels and made tears come to my eyes. stupid ,,maybe ,,but as a kid didnt we all do stupid things . LOL
Only used the acetone after that for cleaning parts and it is very good at cleaning a carburator ...

Most tool reps (Snap-on) ect. carry a refillable can that you can put compressed air in and they work great. They also work with most chemicals. We used them for brake clean.
