nice ride yesterday 6/27/13

went on a lil 75 mile "road ride" to a neat lake in N.Idaho called lake Elsie

just wanted to "get out" .. forgot camera in truck sorry 'cause it is a very pretty lake in an alpine setting .. still 20" snow drifts in the line of sight at the lake and all the late spring green showing on the bluffs make for a neat sight.

anyway we decided to use a trail that cut off the main road and went on up the side of a mountain .. very steep, with a dozen or so switch backs .. have to stop here [my buddy in his Rhino and I] made a lil "pact" that we would not go out without at least one chain saw .. well do to the nature of this ride of "just getting out" for a quick ride neither of us gave it a second thought about throwing the saw in BIG MISTAKE !! ... this "lil trail" turned into another of our epic bust brush and downed tree trails.

we were busting through heavy overgrown brush and went under a dozen downed trees grossing the trail AFTER clearing out the lower ones of limbs and hacking through with our axes and bow saws we have in the "box" .. after a couple miles we came to a section of downed trees that was tooooo much for us .. was at least a dozen larger downed trees blown over by big rain/ snow/ and or wind ...we were both all tuckered out from the efforts of getting in this far ... my buddy has a very bad back, is diabetic and has bad knees all rolled up in one body , me well ya all know I'm a busted up old guy LOL .. so we finally said uncle and came to a place we could turn around [the first one in this whole trail episode] .. we were both in locked 4x4 and crawling n clawing up the side of this mountain with very tricky old overgrown rutted out "trail" straddling the ruts so not to put the rubber side up with steep drop off the down hill side .. a bit scary for the un-inishiated trail busters I might ad.
so long post shortened up a bit we got turned around and clawed our way back to the main road .

I must say at this point if you have a factory two piece roof believe me when I say it can support the lifted trees and old dryed out limbs we were going under .. [for non woods guys .. old dryed out limbs are very hard and damned near unbreakable and very hard to get to to saw off .. read in here a overhead can opener] .. well through out this "trail" we were busting through [he was in front in his lower height Rhino].. we were having to dig out the bank of the high side to try to get clearance and some we were lifting the tree and branches with the roofs which heald up thank God LOL ..

and now I'm sitting here fighting leg muscle cramps for the steepness and efforts of yesterday LOL left leg is trying to cramp as I type this .. this all started out at 2:00 AM .... but hey we had phunnn

Love those "typical" northern Idaho rides. Luckily, we've always had the trusty Husqvarna with us to clear trail. Gary painted a pretty clear image of the kind of pain in the ass (and back and knees) one suffers without having one along. Last year, I had a very VERY close call when a long, busted off limb of a fallen tree kicked up, flipped through the cab window and speared me right in the throat. Luckily, we were going slow enough that I was able to react and slap it away with only a good scrape that I told my wife was razor burn (would have worked if she wasn't sitting right next to me and saw it happen...lol). But nothing beats a great ride in the forest. Not a huge fan of desert rides around the Boise area here. They are fun every now and then, but way too dusty and way too dang hot (especially for the kiddos) this time of year.

We're getting ready to head up to Big Smokey for a week long camping trip and ride for the 4th. It's up above Sun Valley and makes for a great ride. Some fun river crossings and such.

09 Prowler 700 XTX, Dynatek FS cdi and coil kit, Maxxis Bighorns, Warn 3500 lb winch, factory windshield/wiper and roof, Trail Armor doors, cage chopped 4", BEARD rear bench seat w/ 4 point harnesses, custom built extended cage. Rockford Fosgate RFX9400 marine stereo, Scosche 6.5' 3-way speakers in custom built overhead console and MB Quart NAU260 marine amplifier. Cobra CB. Sunpro volt, oil pressure and water temp gauges. Custom gauge plate built by RD. Peel 7 Seal lined doghouse.

Gary

Wish I could ride this time of year without having to head North. Just to dang hot. Glad you are able to get out on the trails.

2009 Prowler XTZ 1000 with a few modifications. Needs paint & powder coating.

best time of the year , especially after T-Storms = no dust .... and the overgrown trails are usually still wet/nice soil for grip as you claw you way up mountain sides to steep to walk .... forcing yourself to be sure to make it to the top or a turnaround spot LOL these old knees [ok one old one new] do not take the steep down hill pounding well at all !
but it won't be long til the heat will dry things out .. main feeder roads are dust by early mid day now .. dust masks are mandatory for the ones behind someone !
