A friend wrote this about a close call he had on another forum and thought it would make for some good reading on here ..

This was way back, this time of year between '77 and '78. I was in the army and stationed at Ft. Carson, in Colo. Springs. My buddy Thor had this '74 Merc Capri and at some point he had done some damage to the front bumper and the driver's side stuck out a little. Anyways, he had some friends wintering in Salt Lake and since that's where I am from, we made a spur-of-the-moment decision to head to Utah for New Years Eve.

We decided to take I-25 to Cheyenne then I-80 to Salt Lake. Everything was fine, good roads and all 'till we got around Laramie or so, then we got into a major ground blizzard. I was driving by then and Thor was asleep. The road was more or less snowpacked, with areas of clear pavement, and the people were cool, everyone was going about 40 or so except for a semi that was going just a little faster and he was passing me.

Remember how some semi's had their tire chains hanging on little racks between the fuel tanks and rear wheels? I'll never know if he hit me or if I hit him, but all at once we were together and that fubared front bumper was hung up in those tire chains. Holy cow! I remember looking out the window and all I could see was semi tire. It knocked the mirror off door and left black rub marks down the side of the car.

Somehow, I didn't panic. I just gave it a little bit of right rudder and after about 20 minutes (seemed like-I'm sure it was just a few seconds) I caught a piece of dry pavement and broke loose. All I could think of was getting sucked under those drivers, in that Capri, the semi driver probably woulda thought he had just hit a pothole. Man, I pulled over and started shaking and ol' Thor wakes up and is wondering why we stopped and what's going on. I made him drive the rest of the way.
