The Motorcity really has suffered over the years! High crime rate, high murder rate, mass poverty, officials that stole more than anyone could imagine! Bankruptcy and loss of population. I remember when Detroit was ranked 4th, or 5th in nationwide population, now they don't even rate a top 25! They are slowly trying to bring it back, but it will be a long struggle. Schools are in terrible shape (buildings), funding at an all time low, tax base does not meet the need! The city has been trying to sell abandoned properties with not much luck. There are many areas in the city that are not safe at any hour! Eastern Market, and Downtown are making a comeback, Greektown, and the casinos are safe, Outer Detroit areas are safe. Hard to believe how mismanagement can screw things up, but Detroit can show you how not to do things! Things are not completely hopeless they are making efforts, but it is hard to trust the officials!

A lot of the abandoned properties get taken care of on Devil's Night, although it has slowed down in recent years.

That was a tradition in Detroit! Driving the expressways, you could see all of the blight. Some of the older neighborhoods that were the pride of Detroit were ruined. Michigan State Police handle the expressways, Detroit City Police handle everything else.
