I have a general question for many of you longtime Prowler or side by side owners. What is the appropriate range to drive in when during the below occasions? I am trying to make my machine and belt last as long as possible and is the reason for the question and appreciate the response.


Thick sugar sand at slow and fast speeds


Thicker mud


Towing a trailer = Low range


Normal trail riding without the above situations = High range

so air pressures / flotation makes a huge difference in the scenario's mentioned in gear selections as does tire widths and tread pattern is huge also

sand needs floatation especially sugar type , slow = low range , high range IF i say IF not bogging it down and fast moving .. no matter what type sand, it takes a bunch more power to run sand so gear might not be the issue either. heat may be the deterring factor .. belt and engine

mud .. lots of types of mud sloppy wet , gumbo stick to tires and grow gear ratio type , slick hard pack no traction type .... have to see what the engine is doing and decide where ya need to be

bottom line there is not a pat answer to your questions but common sense ... if you giving it full throttle and and not gaining speed at slow speed your cooking the belt and soon to over heat the engine probably , up to your judgment buddy and we each ride differently

My rule is if the wheels don't respond quickly to my foot (or thumb on my cat ATVs) then I should have been in low. Throttle response really helps in the sand & mud.

I use low range any time it starts to bog down. Plowing deep snow, deep mud, loose sand towing anything weighing over 500 lbs. I dragged a bean field a few years back in low and it worked great. High range for cruising trails.

Mine spends 90% of its time in Low gear.
Plowing snow, hauling loads in the bed, riding mud holes or rocky trails.
And then 10% in High gear when on dirt roads or frozen lakes.

Original belt still, and this thing has worked 'hard'. Like seriously hard.

Low gear for plowing, high gear for 90% of everything else! Believe it or not, I run high gear on the sand dunes! It gets me up on top of the sand instead of digging in, but the steep inclines do cause low gear to be used!
