Hey guy's.

I'm new to the ATV game and could use some help with a few issues. Long story short - my dad gave me his XTZ 1000 this weekend. It's an 09 with 55.6 hours on it. He has been unable to drive it over the last three years do to health reasons but has been able to start it every six months or so. He had it serviced just before it started to sit.

Things I have done as of today.
1) Cleaned three years worth crap off of it.
2) I had to replace the battery (replaced with an OEM battery)
3) Drained old gas and added new gas. (5 gal and added FI cleaner)
4) Checked oil. (level was good and oil was clean)

Now here where I need help and advise.
1) It will start right up but will not stay running if my foot is not on the gas. It did have a small back fire with some white smoke. I was only able to do this for about 5 min before I had to call it quits for the night. (I'm guessing the old fuel is still in the system. I plan to let it run for a longer time tomorrow.

2) The emergency break will not stay all the way down. When I release it and push it all the way down it will come back up 3 clicks every time. (break light is red on the dash and has resistance when I push on it.

I plan on checking the plug tomorrow because it's only been run for short time frames over the last three years.

Thank you in advance for any help and advise.

Marcus

Sounds like it could use a set of plugs, and it sounds like the e-brake cable is frozen in the jacket under the doghouse. I would check the caliper end and try to give it a tug with a pair of vice grips or a small pry bar

the brake cable is in a bind and needs a lil bit of rerouting to get the bind out of it .. common issue and must be addressed as it can /will cause a fire from super heating the caliper and rotor ... you must be sure it's 100% off .

mine also sticks bout 1 click and I have to hold down the button and brake lever for a second right when I take off then it stays down/off I have played with the routing and it still does this after 5000+ miles ... some have removed the emergency brake system and gone to line locks other have been successful with cable rerouting and some with a bit O lube .. BUT YOU MUST FIND / FIX the issue and NEVER trust it to be off EVER .. make sure it's light is out and not up a click or two.

welcome to the house and don't be a stranger ..

My E-Brake did that also, do you have a hand lever, or foot pedal? I did what Gary said, plus I had to replace the brake pads. Several members have devised and added the perfect parking brake issue. I'm sure they will provide pictures and info on how it was done. Great to have a new member!

Thanks for the advise on the e-break. I'll try all of that when I get home.

As for the plugs. How many do I need and what kind? Are these something I can pick up at a auto parts store or do I have to go to a ATV dealer?

Mine has the hand level.

I was thinking about just zip tying it down for the short term. I need to have it running by next week. If i park it on flat ground in gear I should be good right?

Thanks for all the advice. I replaced the plugs today and it's running like a champ. Next is the e-break problem but she's up and running.

Thanks again for helping a new guy out.

Glad you have it running, should give you a great ride. Word of caution, if and when you change oil, make sure you use a wet clutch compatible oil, Arctic Cat, Ames, Mobil one, and several others offer it. Look at the motorcycle section in auto parts stores, Advance Auto, O'reillys, Auto Zone, and so on. Never run without a air filter, dust will kill these things quickly!

also use the search and find a thread about a oil checking door .. I haven't done it but plan on doing it as our oil dip sticks are a PIA to get into [XTZ Models] ... they are a "trap door" about 4-5" and allow you to mount where ya want it for access to the stick ... aka a hinged fuel door .. low $$ ones available at Summit Racing type places.

You can say that. I was able to take it out today for a shoot run and holy hell is this thing fast. I never thought it would throw any head back like it did.

Thanks for the advice on the oil. I found a ATV store just down the road for me and they all that stuff.

On the air filter, is the stock air filter suppose to be oiled?

Yeah, you can say that again. Thanks for the lead, I love doing mods on my toys.

YES ... but don't over oil or under oil if you haven't done it get the free download service manual .. oil accordingly

hope you have experience with dirt bikes as that will help in knowing the amount of oil in filter when done right.

also look at the threads about extending the air intake , might not be for you but they make a difference as to quality of air for the unit. [our air intakes are in a bad spot from the factory]

I re-did my air intake as it was in a bad location stock! It was between the bed and the seat back. Many members have created their own snorkel system's. They are available after market, or you can go to Lowes and buy 2" PVC fittings and do you own for a fraction of the cost. I think I have it posted in my albums.
