I have an 08 Prowler XT 650, upgraded CDI, Intake, and pipe. It will start fine and run great most of the time but randomly it wont do anything. It acts like it has a dead battery but if I wait a bit it will fire right up. It has a brand new battery. I wonder if it has too much compression or if there is a comprssion release valve that is not working properly. All lights work fine, all battery leads are tight and clean, all cables are in good shape. Any ideas?? This is driving me nuts

I tried neutral and gear with brake on and brake off. It engages like it wants to start but dont have the juice, but with in a couple minutes it turns over with no problem. I am going to look into the brake switch a little more and see if I can bypass it. Thanks for the ideas.

Ok then try this the next time it does it.Have some jumper cables ready and use the positive only side of the cables. The starter solenoid is located under the drivers seat pan or plastic.Using the jumper cables connect the positive of the cable to one side of the solenoid. And then connect it to the other side of the solenoid. When you do this it should turn the engine over like you have turned the key to start it.

I have an 07 650 H1 and I have the same starting problem as he does but i have no power at the dash at all. When I turn the key on nothing happens. If I jump the solenoid it starts and the dash lights up but then goes to no volts code on the dash. It runs fine after I jump it. I ran it for an hour or two. It has had some problems miss firing and running wierd but it always just clears up after I turn it off or rev it up. When it is running I have only 4-6 volts at the key and sometimes none. 12.5 volts at the battery. I'm stumped, any ideas?

Hey 07prowler, I would try cleaning off connections at the battery and at the starter, as well as the solinoid and chassie ground. It sounds to me like it is not making a good connection. And have you load tested your battery? It may be showing 12 volts but under a load it may not putting out enough amps to start..

Are you saying it doesn't turn over or click or anything? Or it starts to turn over but can't make it past the compression stroke? If its the latter, adjust the valves.

Yeah, thats it. It seems it can't get past the compression stroke. I will adjust the valves and I really do think that will solve the problem. See I knew someone on here would have the answer. Thank you very much. And I even went and bought an Optima yellow top, ol well money well spent.

It runs if I jump the solenoid. I've driven for a couple hours. Turned it off, started it by jumping it. When its off and I turn the key on nothing happens. I jump it and away it goes. The dash comes on for a second then goes out and dispays - volt - an error code. No power in the fuse box when it has the key on. Main power works but nothing on the ignition fuse. It also runs with the battery disconnected which I thought was wierd. ??? It doesnt charge the battery at all though.

yo

yeah, its stopping on the compression stroke at tdc, adjusting your valves is supposed to help but i had mine adjusted locally and it still does it. i have heard if you run them just a little on the loose side it helps..

i installed a battery box and a nice battery in the bed and it definatly doesnt happen as often.

i had starting issues at 500 miles. the compression valve spring was not seated properly from factory. they put it a new one and been working fine since, now over 2000 miles. might not be your problem, just thought i would throw it out there..

I put mine a little on the TIGHT side and the problem went away and hasn't done it once since.

If it runs with the battery disconected then at least we can rule out the charging system..
Do you have power to the fuse box? And just no power coming out of the fuse box?

rgr that i havnt had success fixing it on mine they just said running them loose would help, and it didnt lol (when i brought it in for warranty)

glad to here you fixed it by runing them on the tight side! ill do this also!

and its not electrical mine does the same thing its just making a direct connection to the starter and its not spinning the starter so it drains the batterys voltage for a second and kills the display wont even click or anything. cycle the key again and mine will turn over and usually start no problem (and yes im waiting for the gauges to cycle) :) i have never had to jump my sylenoid to get it past the tdc on the motor though usualy a cycle of the key fixes it.

Where were all you guys last year when I posted the same thing, I could have saved a few hundred bucks and a lot of being ready to set my Prowler on fire when it won't start. I have not had time to adjust my valves but I am almost positive that will fix mine by the way it acts. It is a lot worse with the starting thing in the winter would that also be related to the valves? I bought a Odyssey PC 680 battery last fall and did not help so a few months ago I said screw these little batteries and bought a yellow top Optima, it fit under the hood perfect but I like to have my space. Any of you guys have another spot you have made for another battery? I would be happy to weld up something if you all have any ideas.

I put mine in the dry storage as well.
I have been eyeballing the brace above the front axle for a batt. plate and support off of the vert. frame member of pass. tire.
That would give me back my storage and lower the cg. I also have a optima car battery in mine.
