Hello all,

I need some assistance on an 2012 Prowler HDX 700 linkage/transmission.

All of a sudden it goes into reverse whether in H or L driving at low speeds. I can sit in my garage and shift all day and if in any "action" gear it will actually be in reverse. I thought I had it: I cranked it, shifted into "H," drove out the garage, onto the street, then into the Cul-de-sac in 2 wheel drive. Started to make a turn and REVERSE kicks in! I had to back it into the garage.

I adjusted the transmission linkage: I disconnected the linkage rod, manually shoved it all the way up! (PARK!) Reconnected and tightened.

Adjusted the "Park" linkage up front to both extremes and NOTHING CHANGES! The indicator light for "Park" has always stayed on since a maintenance trip a year or so back so that indicator is no assistance.

HELP!!!!! What else could it be?????

That is weird! Being the way they shift, I would think it would grind like crazy! So you are moving forward in Hi, or Low, and it goes into reverse? Does it slam in, or is it mild going in? I'm thinking one way bearing is your problem. You do not need the one way bearing, in fact many members have removed it (I Did on mine), and the only thing effected is a slight decrease in engine braking. AC had a bulletin out regarding the bearing late last year. It cautioned that the bearing should be removed if you are pulling, or carrying heavy loads. Let us know what you find! I'm sure others will chime in also!

AHHHHH! I am pulling heavy loads, and it started soon afterwards. I use my "CAT" for play and for work. I had to cut down some fairly nice-sized trees then "DRAG THEM AWAY!"

I am moving slow in "H" or "L" then it just goes into "R!" No grind, NO notice, IT IS JUST THERE ALL OF A SUDDEN!

I need to look-up this "one way bearing!!!!!"

THANKS FOR THE REPLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I ALWAYS use LOW GEAR when hauling/towing. My place is MOUNTAINOUS so it is a habit to start in "L!"

I cannot locate the info here: Do you just delete the "One way bearing" then put it all back together or is there something else you need to do??????

your first response fellow is the Man to go to for single cylinder info .. but IIRC there is a kit that must be used

and good for you as to gear choice !!

Not a lot of information out there for this procedure....or what you need to do! I am not the "mechanic" type anymore or the "money" type so I need to do it myself and learn as I go!!!!

Ron, you can download a manual at K&T lawn and garden (free downloads), as far as the one way bearing, you will need to remove the outer clutch cover, both primary, and secondary clutched, drain the oil, remove the inner cover and the oneway bearing just sits on the wet clutch hub. I think on an HDX, the gas tank needs to be removed as the clutches are on the passenger side of the engine. Cover gaskets are re-usable if you are careful. Keep the outer cover bolts separate from the inners as they are different lengths. From what you said, I'm guessing on the oneway, others may offer different ideas! Getting the clutch nuts off will require an impact. Job is not that bad, but can be intimidating at first!

No kit needed. Just pull it off and run without. RD pretty much has it covered. Easy job. I would order and replace the inner clutch cover gasket just to be on the safe side (not worth risking leaking oil and having to go back in). The outer clutch cover should be okay as long as you are careful.

I have attached a couple of pictures. The one way bearing just slides over the wet clutch. It isn't showing on the first picture because it slid off with the inner clutch cover housing. You can see the bearing inside that housing on the other picture. Get to that point in the tear down, and just slide it out and leave it out.

One Way Bearing?????

Thats a new one to me,never heard of on going into reverse while driving forward......I dont see it being the one way bearing.

I do not see this as a one way bearing issue either. All I can do is play with linkage some more.

We were dragging some heavy logs, then the son and grandson went to play on the mountain. It is up on the steep grades of the mountain where this began!
