Ok my fellow Prowler owners. I have been all over the internet looking for an answer regarding my sons Fords transmission and have had no luck. Seems to be quite a few good mechanics on here, so I figured I'd give it a try. The truck is a 98 F150 4x4 4.6 liter with an automatic transmission from a 97 F-150. All has been fine until the other day. He called me and said it would not move in forward only reverse. I to his location, added a little fluid, put it in gear and it moved forward. Put it back in park and went to move again and nothing.

What I have found is that occasionally it will go straight into drive, others time in order to get it to move forward you have to feather the gas to get it rolling then your off and good. However, at about 20 mph you can hear some raddling going on from around the transmission area. "Hard to tell exactly from the cab with the exhaust noise" Anyways, I dropped the pan and the fluid seemed ok and no larger chunks or anything. Metal shavings on the magnet but it has probably around 80k miles on it since the last rebuild. "That was completed prior to me"

No check engine light and the O/D light is not flashing.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Did you try to put it manual "1" or 2 so see if it moves ?

I'd try what Diesel Racer said, I had a '79 GMC 4x4 (automatic transmission) I buried it in mud and slammed the shifter from forward to reverse too hard and too many times. I screwed up the transmission, I could only move if I started in low and shifted up through the gears.

Goes directly in reverse with no problem. Going forward however is another story. You have to feather the throttle to get it moving then it is all good until you stop again.

It does sound like a smoked band.

Question. Would you have the transmission rebuilt for $2,300 or order a reman from A transmissions for about $1,000 shipped to my door and no core required? Reman has a 5 year warranty, but of course you pay the shipping.
