I am waiting for a 4000 lb. winch to be installed on my Prowler. Searching this forum on winches I found some scary photos of where a winch mount tore off the frame doing some extensive damage. Is this a common problem and if it is what are owners doing to strengthen the mount? I won't be winching up cliffs, but out of a bog is a sure bet. I also use the winch for pulling logs into clearings, animals where I can work on them. That sort of thing. Can I over exert the pull and do damage as the pictures show or is this a rare thing to happen?

I think the factory winch mount is pretty stout as is. I'll have to check out the pictures you mentioned.

I had a 5000 lb winch on mine ans so did other people as long as you use your head when winching you will not have any problems at all ,,,when winching your self from a mud hole is the most pressure you can put on it is suction from the mud just pull a little at a time to relece the suction or keep the tires spinning if possible to carve your path,,,,,,just my 2 cents:D

I owned a prowler a while back. I have never had any problems you have mentioned. I have been pretty stuck with it. A guy I know put a 8000 pound winch in that very spot. I did not see it to beefed up at all he has had no problems with the frame.

using common sense will keep you out of most troubles ... when using a winch [for newbies] stay away from the cable under tension, use a cable weight [when cable snaps if helps control the direction of the now loaded tension cable] and best of all advise go to the new nylon rope type cables they don't load like wire rope does with energy ..
back to winch mount .. again IMHO the factory one is rated for a normal UTV winchs and normal use for that rating ... anyone can over load it to the breaking point , kinda like a trailer, load it till the frame breaks or becomes dangerous. most UTV's will not hold traction when at the point of overloading them and trouble starts when hooking to a tree or daisy chain of rigs for holding the UTV using the winch
